Many people believe that you can only find energy careers if you have a degree that specifically relates to the sector, but nothing could be farther from the truth. In fact, when Florida’s Women in Energy Leadership Forum performed a poll, just 19% of respondents said the main focus of their studies was related to the field. Energy careers need STEM majors or those studying similar fields.
Perhaps the most important factor in choosing energy careers is demand. Research shows that STEM skills are some of the most sought after in the industry. Plus, the sector is booming, adding some 152,000 new jobs last year alone, according to the U.S. Energy and Employment Report (USEER). Energy efficiency and electric power generation saw more than a 7% hike in hiring and the trend is expected to continue.
No matter what your skill, goals, and preferences are, there are energy careers suited to you. Interested in changing the world through green energy? You’re in! Want to solve complex issues related to supply and demand? They need you! Prefer to work in an office setting, perhaps developing software or crunching numbers? Companies are looking for YOU.
Women are underrepresented in energy careers, especially when it comes to tech-related and leadership roles. However, many amazing role models have paved the way for women to get into the field, such as Dr. Rita Baranwal, the U.S. Department of Energy office’s first female leader whose degrees are in material science and engineering, as well as champions for green energy like Dr. Pratima Rangarajan, CEO of OGCI Climate Investments whose degrees are in chemical engineering.
Research presented by the Wall Street Journal shows that more than 100 the companies in the S&P 500 routinely offer six-figure salaries, with the energy industry taking nearly half of those spots. The reason for this is simple; technical staff and engineers account for a large portion of their teams. They reward people for the education they’re bringing to the table. Bonuses, vacation, and additional benefits typically round out employee remuneration packages, providing those with energy careers some of the most comprehensive employee benefit packages out there.
The energy sector is well established, which means most companies have very clear paths of progression for employees to follow. This is a boon for people who want to climb the corporate ladder. But, it’s also worth noting that the diversity of the sector makes it possible to pivot to different areas for new challenges and opportunities as well.
