Berry Corporation is looking for an HSE Director to join our team and through collaboration/consultation with all departments/functions, provide strategic leadership and accountability for the Health, Safety and Environment functions across the Organization. The HSE Director will coordinate, develop, administer, and implement policies, procedures, and training programs designed to verify all employees and facilities are in compliance with Federal and Local environmental, occupational health, safety, corporate responsibility, and other related requirements. Leads and champions the health, safety, and environmental compliance vision and strategy at all levels of the Organization to drive ownership of a comprehensive approach to engagement and compliance.
Develops, implements, analyzes, and evaluates continuous improvement of all health, safety and environmental programs while staying abreast of any changes to laws and regulations that impact the Organization.
Oversees compliance with all safety, health, environmental laws, regulations, and corporate policies.
Ensure all decisions are driven by the Organization’s core values.
Influences and coaches business leaders on developing robust action plan to improve health, safety, and environmental performance and implement strategy moving forward.
Maintains and monitors HSE Management System and associated metrics to determine progress and effectiveness of safety initiatives, programs, processes, and policies.
Partners with Human Resources to manage risk, worker’s compensation claims, and other return to work programs while developing and implementing cost-saving measures to conserve company resources.
Assists individual company safety leaders and mentors the health, safety, and environmental team’s development, including selection, training, evaluation, and counseling.
Communicates and collaborates with all teams to ensure safety strategies, programs, corporate policies, and expectations are properly understood and adhered to.
Facilitates the educating of all employees on the HSE principle i.e. all employees own HSE.
Responsible for integrating, planning, and approving objectives of all projects within HSE.
Plans and maintains departmental budget.
Oversees due diligence/divestiture and data room screening/setup efforts to verify all risks have been addressed.
Directs the functional activities of the HSE department and makes provisions to take advantage of current and future opportunities.
Takes a proactive approach to monitoring, identifying, and solving employee issues within the HSE group.
Regularly interacts with third parties in areas of responsibility and complicated settings.
Manages relationships with internal departments and external vendors to promote the company’s highest quality and HSE performance.
Supports and promotes change within the Organization.
Communicates with clarity and precision across all levels of the Organization.
Networks, facilitates and benchmarks with peers and others to identify HSE best practices and opportunities to improve the overall HSE performance.
Maintains complete knowledge of potential HSE risk situations and minimizes company exposure to risk.
Ensures the development and implementation of an incident and crisis management process.
Responsible for ensuring comprehensive and root cause investigations are conducted, and effective corrective actions are implemented when nonconformance is discovered.
Ensures audit findings are disseminated to various departments and/or external suppliers. Ensures responses are collected and recorded for evaluation as to true root cause of finding, corrective and preventative action.
Enables a culture focused on understanding risk and proactive mitigation
Interface and maintain relations with facilities, regulatory agencies, and customers to address issues identified for improvement or resolution.
Partners with operations in order to develop initiatives as needed.
Complies with all the Company’s HSE policies, practices, and programs. Takes corrective action within training limitations. Escalates as necessary.
Participates in and adheres to all training programs designed to enhance HSE knowledge, safety standards and improve job performance.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Engineering, or related discipline.
Relevant professional certifications (e.g., CSP, CHMM, REHS/RS, CIH) are a plus.
Master’s degree in Environmental, Health, Safety or related discipline preferred.
20+ years of HSE experience within the oil and gas industry.
7+ years of management experience.
Broad regional experience in a variety of oil and gas producing basins.
Experience in mid-size companies preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Advanced knowledge of HSE laws, regulations, and rulemaking mechanisms and the ability to integrate practical information from diverse sources for multiple areas of responsibility.
Demonstrated leadership in areas of professional conduct and business ethics across functional discipline and across departments.
Experience in HSE strategy and tactics.
Demonstrated knowledge of the importance of organizations’ core values and utilizing the values in day-to-day tasks.
Ability to effectively develop and manage a team of professionals.
Communication skills to educate and motivate employees to adopt HSE values and best practices to improve the overall HSE performance of the Organization.
Ability to build consensus across departments.
Decision-making skills, as well as problem-solving expertise.
Advanced project management skills.
Ability to apply broad business principles and industry standards.
Advanced Cal and Fed OSHA knowledge.
Working knowledge of the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and/or National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).
Working knowledge of waste management and environmental reclamation regulations.
Experience with the Microsoft Suite.
Ability to lead, mentor, and coach.
Demonstrated passion for HSE.
Ability to facilitate the commitment to HSE the principle that all employees own and are responsible for HSE.
Progressive work experience in oil and gas operations.

Competitive salary depending on experience including a short-term cash incentive bonus and long-term incentive awarded in restricted share units.
