What’s the role
The Shell UK Mobility business has a company owned presence of 525 service stations. As a Non Fuel Retail (NFR) business, CR UK sources goods and services across a broad spectrum of FMCG categories. It works to a business model in which Shell does not take stock ownership but works with contracted organisations who offer an integrated service. This will include the procurement and distribution of goods and services out to Shell UK company owned service stations.
CR UK has a core offer of FMCG products and services complemented with a food-for-now proposition (JOdbS & Costa Express) as showcased on our Shell Select stations. This is enhanced with a food-for-later and top-up convenience offer developed in close collaboration with alliance partners (Waitrose & Budgens). To drive long term sustainable growth, the business is focused on developing an ever-evolving offer that satisfies the needs of a diverse customer base. Each service station has to provide customers with an optimal mobility offer and must cater to customers with different retail shopping missions.
The NFR 50:50 growth aspirations of the broader Shell organisation cannot be maximised without a constant pursuit of excellence in CR execution. Critical to the health of the CR business is therefore a continuous programme of improvement. The Space Planning Team is responsible for ensuring business excellence through the provision of industry leading micro and macro space planning. The UK has a well-established space planning function that utilises the JDA software and CKB database. This role presents a great opportunity to be part of that specialist team and make a mark on the business. CR UK Space Planners are required to be involved in managing planogram hierarchies, store area analysis, floorplans, and reporting, evolving micro and macro plans in JDA whilst identifying constant opportunities to increase performance.

All the above has meant that CR UK continues to drive record performance year after year, delivering growth ahead of the market. This is a unique opportunity to join the high performing CR Team in a specialist role that has a very distinct skillset and areas of responsibility.
The backbone of a successful UK CR business is underpinned with best-in-class execution and continuous improvement. It is pivotal to remaining competitive in the retail environment. The purpose of this role will be to maximise profit made from the sales space on our UK Service Station Network and evolving the CR UK offer through provision of compelling micro and macro plans. This will mean benchmarking competitors and reviewing market trends or intelligence. The role will utilise space planning tools and expertise to optimise all available sales opportunities and to support the broader team to define the customer offer. The position holder will be required to liaise with, or represent, various CR functions.
As a CR Space Planner, the position holder is responsible for managing the space on our service stations to drive profitable growth, now and in the future. He/she is responsible for working with Category Managers to co-own profitable micro space range reviews and planograms, maximising macro space to deliver sales and profit through managed floorplans. The holder will be responsible for keeping abreast of all new market developments, benchmarking Shell performance against the competition and identifying untapped or future growth opportunities. Due to the wide scope of work, he/she must have strong analytical skills and the experience needed to interrogate reports and market data to provide robust recommendations. He/she must be an expert in the use of JDA Space Planning Tools, this must however be combined with strong stakeholder management skills. There will be simultaneous timelines and he/she be required to champion the pursuit of incremental sales, revenue across the UK retail business. The role will need to form clear and robust ways of working between the Category Management and Supply Chain Teams.
The key responsibilities of the role would be:
Utilise space planning software to deliver the most efficient and effective implementation of the CR UK propositionEnsure optimal use of micro and macro space; undertake robust assessments of sales per linear metre across the Shell network for assigned categories or formatsProvide macro store plans for new store openings, expansions and resets (including layouts, category selection and merchandising equipment) to ensure best use of space for customer demographic or format typeCreate and maintain micro space planograms in line with the annual range review calendar, working in close collaboration with CR UK Category Managers to augment CR revenue in line with stretching T&R TargetsEnsure assortment optimisation across the portfolio of categories sold within Shell; review data metrics for each product, category and fixture size to maximise sales, margin and profit performancePresent recommendations for new space allocations or equipment solutions that will drive incremental sales and margin growthProvide month-to-month planogram support to maximise sales performance from seasonal, limited edition and promotional featuresAct as custodian of space to protect the formal License To Operate; ensuring Shell service stations are compliant with licensing or age related product regulations and/or guidelinesUndertake regular field visits in market visiting Shell company owned alongside competitor store visits (forecourt, convenience, high street and travel)Sustain a proactive awareness of market trends, consumer needstates and shopper missions; ensuring a customer centric approach to all space planning activitiesMaintain a product and image database in support of the software systemEstablish a cross-functional relationship across Category Management, Supply Chain, Sales and Network
What we need from you
Shell continues to strive to build a professional retail organisation. Direct experience of space planning is a must for this application and a clear understanding of the UK CR business will be an advantage. The following requirements will form a key part of the evaluation process and candidate selection for this role:
